To tell you the truth, I never have been overly excited about the word "sermon" because of the negative connotation it carries; however, it is Friday and Sunday is coming, which means that it is once again "sermon time" whether I like the term or not. Actually, I prefer the term "message" because at least in my mind it means that God has a message for us and I am merely His messenger, but that scares me to death (not really but it does make me nervous!) because it implies that I need to be sure that what I am saying is His message and not mine.
Some of you know this but just in case you do not, I have a drawing in my office that is supposed to depict Jesus but it is not the usual one because in this one, He laughing and not just laughing but laughing His head off! I have no idea what got Him so tickled but He is laughing--really laughing.
You would be surprised at the numbers of people who cannot conceive of Jesus laughing and, consequently, do not appreciate the drawing. Even so, I love it and so it continues to hang on my wall (when I can keep Kevin from stealing it and hanging it on his wall)!
Now to my message for Sunday: "And when Jesus came into the official's house, and saw the flute-players, and the crowd in noisy disorder, He began to say, 'Depart; for the girl has not died, but is asleep.' And they began laughing AT HIM" (Matthew 9:23-24; emphasis, added).
It is one thing for Jesus to be laughing, but it quite another for someone to be laughing at Him, especially when He is not in a laughing mood! Unfortunately, He is laughed at lots!
I hope to see you on Sunday morning; please pray that this message will be His message!
Grace & peace,
Your Pastor
