Well, I Tried to Tell You!

I did my best to inform you that John would be preaching yesterday morning and he did! One of the passages to which he referred is still ringing in my mind and heart: ". . .but this hour and the power of darkness are yours" (Luke 22:53b). These are the words Jesus spoke to those who were trying to take Him by force! He gave these dingbats the hour and the power of darkness! Had I been there, I would have cut someone's ear off myself! Thanks John for a great job!

Shhh! It is a Surprise!!!!!!

Someone is having a birthday on February 1 but do not tell anyone; I am posting his picture, just for the record. The lady standing beside him is, well, she was unfortunately standing beside him, when I took the picture. She does improve his looks quite a bit, however, which is a very good thing!

Be on the Lookout!

We had a visitor today, one whom no one seemed to recognize; although a couple of our ladies did attempt to befriend him. He looks a bit "tipsy," among other things. Anyway, if anyone recognizes him, please do something!

Humility and How I Achieved it!

Not really, just getting your attention; however, my message tomorrow will be on the subject of humility, taken from the text where Jesus told His disciples to feed the 5,000. I know it will be cold outside, but I hope you make it your business to be present and accounted for at 10:00 AM sharp!

Blessings and love,
Mac

Simple Church!

Our meeting last night was very encouraging to me. In the first place, the weather was, shall I say, inclement, but you came anyway! In the second place, it seems that everyone is "buying" into the vision of simple church and that is very encouraging! In the third place, Dudley and Debbie are doing an excellent job, as they attempt to involve everyone in the journey.

To be honest, I am quite-convinced that there are many people, who would love to be a part of a church that truly practiced the simplicity and purity of devotion to Jesus--no frills, no programs, no pressures--where fellowship is exciting, where worship is genuine, where the Word is taught, and where the sacraments are celebrated.

As we begin to make others aware of what we enjoy and invite them to enjoy it with us, I believe we will see some beautiful and wonderful things happen!

Blessings!

Wednesday Evening

Please plan to meet together this Wednesday evening at 7:00 for pizza and, then, to continue our discussion regarding how we might best make others aware of "Simple Church". I am hearing that snow is predicted, so hold on for the sleigh ride!

Sunday's Message: Jesus' Final Instructions

Hopefully, each of you has a will, aka "Last Will and Testament," in which you have left your final instructions to those you love (if you have not, let me encourage you to do so--soon). Anyway, Jesus DID in fact leave some final instructions to His apostles (simple, straightforward instructions)--remain in Jerusalem and wait for the witnessing power the Father has promised! They did as they were told, and He did as He promised! Wow!

Notice, however, that He did not tell us (you and me) to attempt to replicate this (although many have futilely done so); in fact, about all I can see that refers to you and to me is this: we are the recipients of the blessing of their powerful witness!

I hope to see you in the morning!

God's Promise Fulfilled!

Thursday morning, January 10, 2008

This is what Jesus said (among other things) about His church: “. . . I will build My church and the gates of Hades (Hell) shall not overpower it” (Matthew 16:18b). Soon (very soon) after making this declaration, He told His disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ (vs. 20, in case you don’t believe me!). Please allow my paraphrase: “I and I alone will be responsible for building My church and nothing will stop me or hinder me, not even the gates of Hell, but don’t tell anyone who I am or what I am about; let’s keep this a secret.”

Funny how none of the politicians, be they Democratic or Republican, are taking this approach today. Oh, to be sure, each of them is making it clear that he (or she) will rebuild America and do it in such a way that no one, not even the radical Muslims (the gates of hell), will be able to overtake her; HOWEVER, none of them has said, even implied, “Let’s keep this a secret!” Each of them is spending more money, than most of us can even imagine, for the sole purpose of letting everyone know who they are (the best candidate by far) and what they are about (being America’s “messiah”!). To be sure, His ways are NOT our ways—period.

Regardless of the promises any of the presidential candidates might make (raise taxes, cut taxes, secure the borders, open the borders, quit the war, bring the troops home, stay the course, end the IRS, implement the Fair Tax, begin universal health care [God forbid!], decrease crime or increase crime) they will NOT keep them—not a single one of them—and they will not because it is not within their power to keep them. The fact is this: everything these politicians are saying is mere rhetoric (the ability to use language effectively, especially to persuade or influence people; fine-sounding but insincere or empty language) and, amazingly, many American really place their hope in the foolish rhetoric of these demigods.

Then there is Jesus and His, “Let’s keep this a secret!” mentality. Basically, this is what He said (my paraphrase): I am the Christ, the Son of God and I will build My church and I will build it without anyone’s help and I will do it in such a manner that nothing, not even the Gates of Hell will be able to overpower it—THIS IS MY PROMISE TO YOU—but do not tell anyone because I do not want to be bothered with unsolicited help, nor do I want there to be any question, as to who built the church, or as to who sustains her! Now, listen up: Jesus never makes a promise that He will not keep—period.

Many years ago, God promised me that He would allow me to see the true church, the one He built and sustains (I remember right where I was when He spoke to me!) but to be honest, although I remember the moment very clearly, I had almost lost hope, as to ever seeing it.

Last night the GCF group met to begin thinking about how we might best do the unthinkable—LET THE SECRET OUT that Jesus doesn’t need any help, and, thereby, make others aware of what we enjoy, as a part of the Body of Christ—no frills, no programs, no financial drives, no pressures—just church in it purest and simplest form. We gather on Sunday mornings for fellowship, for worship, for the preached/taught Word, and for the sacraments.

It took me until this morning to realize what I saw last night; finally, after all of these years (almost 30), God let me see the true church and He let me see it in action! Yes, I know that the true church exists across the entire world but, as He promised, He let me see it and see it in all its glory last night, as He manifested it in a small group of believers, who were sincerely seeking Him. I am humbled and encouraged, beyond anything mere words might communicate.

The First Service of 2008!

In my humble (well, probably no so humble) opinion, we had a great day today and I was really glad to see each of you! It was so good to have Annie and her son, Matthew, with us, as well as the Kents!! I must admit that I did gently encourage Tabitha concerning her attendance record, and I feel certain that she will respond appropriately (I am posting her picture, just in case)! Only kidding, of course, but I did gently encourage her and I am posting her picture--a thing of beauty is a joy forever!!

Remember our Wednesday night meeting at 7:00 at GCF and under the leadership of Dudley and Debbie!!

Simple Church is the word for 2008!

A Reminder!

On Wednesday evening, January 9, at 7:00 and under the leadership of Dudley and Debbie Bluhm, we will gather in the Sanctuary of GCF to plan, probe, define, discuss, wonder, imagine, and pray about how we might best make others aware of our concept of "Simple Church" Please plan to attend this very important meeting!

In the meantime, be thinking about what you would like for us to do on Wednesdays nights. I am looking forward to receiving your suggestions; use email, if you like.

Blessings!
Mac

Happy New Year?

As I wrote those all-too-familiar words--Happy New Year--I realized just how far short they fell from what is really in my heart, thus the question mark. You see, I truly believe that God has a higher dream for us than mere happiness, although happiness is something we all desire, oftentimes even above His dream for us. To be honest, there have been several occasions during this past year, when, had I been given the opportunity (thankfully, He will not let me go!), I would have traded His dream for even a few minutes of happiness.

At any rate, for 2008, I wish something for each of us, something far greater than mere happiness, as great as happiness is, and it is this: that we might progressively become more intimately acquainted with Him (Writing that scares me to death, so much so, that I am tempted to change "us" to "you"!).

I sincerely believe that this is His higher dream for us and I also believe, just as sincerely, that He is absolutely committed to our experiencing His dream!

On the journey but a bit nervous!
