Who's Tending My Garden?

Heart disease ripped me off! Like a thief in the night, it stole experiences of a man, even though I was only a seven year old boy. Our new pool was being filled by a garden hose. I was playing in what would be the deep end, when I heard your horn "beep-beep" as you drove right by, going home. I can imagine you were taking your "nitro" tablets, which you passed off as Rolaids when I asked what kind of candy you were eating. You probably already had tightness in your chest, clammy palms, and difficulty catching your breath. I asked, "Mama, can we go see granddaddy?" For some reason, she declined, not knowing she would regret that decision for the rest of her life. Surely my EMT father would have noticed your symptoms and insisted you go to the hospital. It would have saved him a call in the ambulance late that night.

My mother and father woke me the next morning with a serious look on their face, and the sad news on their lips. They've told me, since I've been old enough, that they both saw a light switch off in my eyes that morning. I held back the tears--sucked it up--as I tell people to do these days.

During the previous summers, you'd come pick me up early in the afternoon to take me out to the farm, after working in the post office. You normally drove a '70 something model Chevy pickup, baby blue. Wish I had it now. Smelled like a farmer on the inside, a mixture of diesel fuel, a hint of 10-10-10 (fertilizer), oil, soil, and sweat. When I climbed up in your lap in that truck, you always greeted me with, "There's my boy! My only grandson!" as you embraced me with your rough, corn-husker hands. You sometimes would put your hat on my head. 35 years later, that kind of hat is back in style. They call them trucker hats, a tall cap, solid red fabric on the front, and a more breathable mesh on the back, with sweat rings all the way around. When I was in your lap, I just knew I was driving that truck myself.
When I got enough of driving, I turned around to see a pressed, button-down shirt that always had two click pens, with which I loved to play. Behind them was a glasses case, all in the front left pocket.
As we kept riding, we would stop by and put salt blocks out for cows, feed the horses named Frosty and Blaze, and go by and turn the sprinklers on at the big garden near our house. By the time we got back to the barn where the horses were eating, I was usually ready for a nap.
Recently, I went back to that old barn, overgrown with time and weather, falling in, in places. With a lump in my throat, I searched for relics of you. Unfortunately, after 27 years of non-use and neglect, all I found was an old stirrup for a horse and a rusty plow blade, craving to be pulled through the soil. The old well has given in to erosion. Its cement cylinder that I peered over as a very young child, hoping to see the bottom, is now turned over on its side.
You never got to teach me to ride a horse, to plant a seed and patiently wait, grooming the soil for something you don't yet know. To this day, I've never driven a tractor. I'm sure, knowing some of the people I've seen drive one, its pretty simple. Maybe I don't want to know how, since you can't teach me. I'm 34 years old and planted my first little garden this year. So far, just squash and tomatoes. There's more to come though. For some reason, I haven't had any weeds in my garden--not one. . . . makes me wonder . . . Who's helping me tend my garden?

Just for the record: this piece of literary genius was written recently by my beloved son--Michael--who truly loved his granddaddy and continues to miss him even today--27 years after his death. Never, ever underestimate the value of grandparents in the lives of their grandchildren!

Just thought I share it with you--

Another Night in Danville!

It is true: Annis and I found ourselves in the big city of Danville, GA tonight where it rained--real water, rain! I actually saw water standing in the yard of Douglas & Valorie Chance, you know the folk I told you about last week, the ones who live in the country; albeit, not in Jeffersonville but Danville (I stand corrected!).

Anyway, I am confident that you remember my telling you about the drop-dead-gorgeous girl I met last week, while at the Chance's leading a Bible Study; even if you don't, I did and now YOU get to meet her and her fella'! Notice how much better he looks in her presence! Douglas and I fought over which one of us would carry her into the house but neither of us won, as you can see.

Sometimes you meet a young couple and you just know that they are going places; you know that they are not going to allow mediocrity to rule their lives. In this case, he (Jereme) is an RN, who is on his way to medical school! Lazy people do not even think this way, much less take on the challenge, and, I might add, he loves Corrie and it shows!

She (Corrie) on the other hand is pursing her BS in "Mass Communication", doing her internship at the Children's Hospital of the Medical Center, and driving to and from Milledgeville for classes. Trust me on this one, lazy folk don't even have a clue as to her motivation; as I told you last week, she is paralyzed from roughly her waist down, as the result of an auto accident on Easter Sunday, seven years ago, and spends quite a bit of time in her "trimmed-in-pink" wheel chair. Now listen up (if you are feeling sorry for yourself): she drives her car, cleans her house; walks on a treadmill for 30 minutes several times per week; and does whatever else she might decide to do! Remarkable, to say the least!

Corrie is a fighter, too, and don't you forget it; she is determined to overcome and does whatever she is supposed to do to reach that goal!

Sometimes, one goes to give and, instead, receives, and this was one of those times! What an incredible gift!

May God bless Jereme and Corrie as they reach for the stars!!

Greatly encouraged!

There is church and then there is CHURCH!

As most of you know, I had the pleasure of officiating at Jeff's & Christie's wedding, the one that took place in the middle of a tropical storm on Jekyll Island, GA! To be sure, it was one of those weddings that I will never forget, not only because of the storm, but also because of the people--wonderfully, hospitable people, especially the bride and groom!

Because I do not want to lose my perfect attendance record, I offer the enclosed picture as evidence that I did attend a church service that weekend--not just a church service but a CHURCH service, the kind where all of God's creation sings and claps her hands, even the sea makes her holy sounds!

Unforgettable, indeed!

Today's Service

It seems that I have been around the world since our service ended today but, thankfully, I made a quick trip and now find myself back in front of my computer screen trying to remember, which is usually not easy for my worn out brain!

Some services are easier to remember than others and this was one of them. I am not sure just why, other than the fact that I felt that the Lord had given me something to say that was worth saying, namely, this: until and unless we see Jesus in our adverse circumstances, we will continue to view them as overwhelming, unfair, undeserved, too much to bear, even curses from God; however, the moment we see Him in them, we begin to view them more as blessings than curses.

Those two guys on the road to Emmaus definitely saw their circumstances as adverse, not to mention, overwhelming, unfair, undeserved, too much to bear, and probably even a curse from God; they did, that is, until they saw Jesus, and the moment they saw Him, their viewpoint changed!

The more I listen to John, the more I appreciate him and his ministry among us; he is gifted and has such a "heart" for worship. I truly enjoyed and appreciated his ministry to us today; it did, indeed, add so much to our service. By the way, he turned the BIG 60 this past Thursday!! SENIOR CITIZEN STATUS FOR SURE!

I was blessed, too, by our visitors--Jill & Vickie. I can only pray that they saw Him today in their adverse circumstances, and in doing so, that they also saw hope.

From what I can see, Maddie loves communion; I am praying that she will be one of those who truly loves Him and His Table! What and incredible blessings it was to watch her serve the Body of Christ to the Body of Christ!

Think about it: 63 years of marriage!! Congratulations again to Ralph & Data!

Tomorrow is Caryn Reeves 27th birthday--27 and beautiful and single!! What a prize catch, if he (whoever "he" is) could run fast enough!

To be sure, I sincerely appreciated YOUR presence today; it meant more than I could ever tell you. I love each of you very much and pray now that you will have a wonderful week!!

The Road to Emmaus

For those of you who like to be prepared for Sunday's message, I thought I would tell you what I know, as of now: my text is from Luke 24--the story of Jesus' post-resurrection journey to Emmaus, with two very confused, disheartened, fearful, disciples.

I trust that you will read this story several times before Sunday, not just to be able to say that you read it but to see what the Holy Spirit might reveal to you. Who knows, He might give YOU the message. Wouldn't that be a nice! If He does, let me know and I will certainly give you the floor!!

I truly hope to see you then!!

A Night Per Chance!

Tonight Annis and I made our way to Jeffersonville, GA, where I was to lead a Bible Study at the home of Douglas & Valorie Chance (see picture). I had no idea what was expected of me, nor did I have any idea who would be in attendance--other that of course the Goddards and the Chances. For those of you who do not know, these are the very experiences that energize me, as in 240 volts worth of energy, and tonight was no exception! There is something about teaching that old, old story that I really love--always have and always will.

Anyway, a major piece of the "wonder" of tonight was the group He brought together. Corrie, one of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen, was present, along with her fella', Jeremy, and her pink wheelchair. She was involved in an auto accident about 5 years (Easter Sunday) ago, that resulted in paralysis from her waist down; although she is a fighter and she is winning, I feel sure that she has some questions that she wants answered. Her fella', an RN, is now attempting to gain acceptance into medical school! Straw and his wife, Joyce, were also present; in January of this year, their daughter died from a heart attack, leaving her husband and her children. As you might imagine, that pain is still very fresh and probably will be for a long time to come. I think it is safe to say that they are searching for answers and for pain relievers! Then there was Bunny, who works at the local funeral home. Her husband would have been present but he had to attend a Deacon's meeting (God bless him!). Bunny is one precious lady and she is hungry and I am not referring to fried chicken and 'tater salad!

I never know really who is in the "audience", certainly not the pain they might be carrying, but I do know this: that old, old story is the only story that can penetrate one's heart and bring life. I have the strong feeling that it did so tonight!

Why, they even asked that I "do it again next week"!

Tonight's Leftovers

If my count is correct, 16 folk showed up tonight for leftovers, and if my count continues to be correct they ate way more than 16 hot dogs! Now those "dogs" were done right; I cooked them for four hours in a crock pot, along with a bottle of beer. I guess they were good 'cause they disappeared (for the most part!). Annis made a homemade Peach Cobbler which vanished in the twinkling of an eye; I never even saw the thing!

We "officially" started our study of Smith's book, "The Power of the Blood Covenant" and in my opinion, it was a good start. We talked about the chapter "Welcome to the World of Covenant" and, as most of you know, this is right up my "alley"! I am so grateful to God for the New Covenant, the one He made between Jesus and Him, the one that Jesus guarantees! Without it, we all would be eternally damned and that is for sure!

Anyway, I am excited about this time of study and I trust that it will be beneficial to each of us!

Leftovers Tomorrow Evening!

As I trust you know, tomorrow is "leftovers" night at the Goddard residence and you are invited! After a delightful dinner of "leftover" 'possum stew, we will begin a time of study entitled, "Welcome to the World of Covenants."

We live in a world where covenants have no more significance and validity than the weather report, but not so with God; when He entered into covenant with His Son, He entered into COVENANT and as the result, His children are blessed and very much so (to use the words of Peter Lord)!

I am eagerly looking forward not only to learning your response to Smith's book, but also and especially to seeing how it will influence your life.

See you tomorrow night--

A Major Concern!

When I called Ralph this morning to get my daily report, he told me that he had had some chest pains and, as you might imagine, I strongly encouraged him to call his cardiologist, which he did--about four hours later! Did I hear Data say that he is hard headed? Amen!!

Anyway, I am very concerned about Ralph's health, so much so that I am asking you to stop what you are doing and pray for him. Yes, I did call this part of the Body of Christ to prayer several weeks ago, and that "call" is still in effect; however, bump it up a bit, if you will.

"The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man/woman availeth much"

Father's Day Sermon: A Very Unusual Father

For those of you who like to be prepared, my text comes from Luke 15, the portion of it that tells the story of what we frequently call "the prodigal son." Tomorrow, however, I want us to take a rather close look at this prodigal's father--a very unusual father, indeed.

To all of you fathers, I wish a happy and blessed "Father's Day!"

PS: As I told you earlier, today I spoke at a long-time friend's funeral; I thought you would appreciate seeing these pictures, as they are probably as unique for you, as they are for me.

Unique!

As most of you know, I have been in and around the funeral profession for many, many years, and I have seen much. Actually, before tonight I would have said I have seen "everything" but tonight I saw something that I have never before seen--a Confederate soldier standing guard beside the casketed remains of his long-time friend. It was as if I had been taken back in time and given a bird's-eye-view of how things were when some of my ancestors were alive.

Tomorrow, I will be speaking at this man's funeral but the main event will be what this group of Confederate reenactment soldiers carry out before and after I finish my brief remarks.

To be sure, this will be a unique experience for me--

All the Way from California!!

The following is a response I received from one of my recent "Perspectives" (June 11), one that I think will minister to each of you. The "perspective" was the one that contained the prayer from Henri Nouwen's book, "Our Second Birth."

Kelly lives on the other side of the world--California, to be exact--even so, she has an insatiable thirst for Jesus, one that I truly appreciate. In my journey, I have met some folk who really wanted to know Him but, truthfully, they are few in comparison to the numbers I have met; Kelly, however, is one of those who really wants to know Him. She is open, honest and hungry, even teachable. Listen carefully to her heart, as you read her response (I use it with her permission, along with her picture):

"Oh yes...and in just my recent experience, the Lord is faithful to answer that prayer and go deeper into our wounds and broken places of our soul and start the painful work of the process of healing those areas. I was brought up to disregard those "bad" things, or sweep them under the rug, so to speak, and make things look good on the outside, put on a smile and carry on.

The Lord is now teaching me that He wants to address these areas and teach me how to live in victory over them and bring healing. The hardest part for me to learn is to stay in the process; I want to "get it over and be done with it and move on" but He's showing me that the work is in the process. My specific issue that I struggle with is anger, which is my old man pattern way of coping/surviving the fears and terrors that I experienced as a child and even now.

It seems to just creep up on me and something will happen to stir that up in me and then I find myself in this rage of anger inside my heart, and usually it will seep out in my attitude.

Yikes, ok, didn't mean to write all this, but its fresh for me right now; feel free to comment if you like.

If you don't mind my asking, how is your experience with dealing with your issues?"

Now I think you know why I wanted you to meet her.

Blessings,

Your Pastor

LEFTOVERS!

As I trust most of you know, our Wednesday evening "Leftovers" will begin meeting at our house (Mac's, Annis' & the bank's) this Wednesday evening at 7:00. We will begin with a bit of food (hamburgers, hot dogs, ham sandwiches, 'opossum, or something edible), enjoy great fellowship, and have a time of study and prayer. I really hope you can make it!

I have decided to use Malcolm Smith's book, "The Power of the Blood Covenant" as a stimulus for healthy debate and conversation. This book is loaded with Scripture passages and with truth; however, in my not-so-humble-opinion, he has built his thesis on a poor foundation. As you might imagine, this should stimulate healthy debate and discussion, which will serve a very positive purpose: to tie up some loose ends for all of us.

Hopefully, you will order yourself a copy; I ordered mine from Amazon.com for around $12.00.

I am looking forward to seeing you this Wednesday evening!

Blessings,
Your Pastor

PS: It would be nice, if you would let me know that you are coming so that I have enough "possum!

An Amazingly Honest Response!

The following is a response I received from someone from another state, who receives my "perspectives" and I must add that it is an incredibly honest response, one that I believe most people feel but do not have the courage to verbalize. I share it with you with her permission:

"I have hoped that "WE ARE FREE" but it has been the Church that has been a hindrance. I have no desire at this time to choose to love anyone that has not proven trustworthy...I think that is healthy...There is no sense in beating one's head against the wall because others have chosen for you how you are to DO love, and that is how they "judge" you, whether you live up to their standards of how to DO love—you must let them be in control, or else! This is not spirituality but oppression. Jesus did not let the religious rulers choose for Him how He was to DO love. How He chose to DO love caused them to gnash their teeth and bring charges against Him and finally to look on, as the rulers crucified Him. They were contemptuous of Him because He did not succumb to their judgments about righteousness. He knew who He was, and that is what He wants for us, as well. We need to know who we are and not let others choose for us how we are to "be". Thanks for your writing again...and sending it to me."

There are several lines that caught my attention but this one struck like lightening: "I have no desire at this time to choose to love anyone that has not proven trustworthy." I have the strong feeling that she is very familiar with the hurt that religion and religious people bring into one's life but, then, so am I, which is probably why this line "struck like lightening!"

A Great Day at GCF!!

As I had anticipated, we had a great day at GCF, and I am very thankful for it! It seems that all the ingredients necessary for true church came together today and, to be honest, I loved every minute of it!

I want each of you to know that I sincerely appreciated your presence today, as well as your participation. As you know, we had plenty of food and then some, so thanks, too, for cooking (most of you know that I like good food pretty well!).

Several of you told me that we should do this at least once a month, which suits me fine. As you could tell, the resulting fellowship was quite exhilarating and in my humble opinion, we could, certainly, use some more of it.

By the way, please do not forget to come to our house this Wednesday evening for "Leftovers!" I will do my best to find some 'possum or something edible for you to enjoy. The fellowship will be worth the trip!!

Enjoy these pictures!

Blessings,
Your Pastor

Sunday's Service

For several reasons, I am expecting a great service this Sunday: (1) we will gather together to worship Him; (2) some folk called the office today, asking for directions to GCF, indicating that they were coming to visit this Sunday; (3) I received an email from someone who attended GCF for quite a while, until his job moved him and his family away, asking what time our service started, which I took to mean that we just might see them this Sunday; (4) the new bride and groom are going to be present; (5) I will have another opportunity to preach the Good News; (6) we will celebrate the Eucharist; and last but not least, (7) we are having a "covered dish" dinner following our service! By anyone's standard, this should make for an incredible day!

Because I know you want to come prepared, I will give you the text for my message: 2 Kings 5--the story of, among other things, Naaman's being healed from leprosy. Please read the story over several times, even if you have already read it several times, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal truth to you!

Let us all praise Him for our recent and much-needed rain and, as we do, let us ask Him to rain His Spirit upon us, as we meet together this Sunday!

Too Young to Remember

We live in a different kind of world than the one I knew when I was growing up--very different. Truth is there is an entire generation of Americans who know nothing of life as I knew it in my growing up, formative years. I will bet that many of you have never seen an authentic RC Cola and a Moon Pie, much less have enjoyed them. In my day, these were staples, like peas, corn bread, butter beans, sweet iced tea, and fried chicken.

There were some other staples that I really miss: no one ever locked his house and as far as I know, most didn't even have a house key; no one ever broke into someone's car to steal his radio because, well because no one did; every Mom had authority over everyone's kids, which meant that kids behaved or got their bottoms tanned by whichever Mom deemed it necessary; school teachers were held in high esteem, if not by the student, certainly by the parent, which meant the student might as well follow suit; the school teacher was always correct--always--which meant that the student might as well behave in school; church was what church was supposed to be, which meant that family life centered around it; families ate together, which meant that families talked to each other; there were no ratings for TV shows because there was no need for ratings; and America was America--the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I share this with you because tonight when I arrived at a local restaurant to eat supper, a bus load of soldiers (young men and women!) unloaded just ahead of me. I talked with some of them and learned that they were on their way to Fort Benning to begin a tour of very disciplined training. As you might imagine, most of them will find themselves in harms way sooner, rather than later. Before I moved on to eat, I said to those who were engaged with me, "I really appreciate what you are doing! Freedom is really not free and you are earning mine!" The response from one of the young men really shocked me; it was this: "Thank you because we seldom hear that!"

You might not be old enough to appreciate the joys of an RC Cola and a moon pie, or any of the other pleasantries I mentioned, but you are old enough to appreciate what the men and women who are earning your continued freedom are doing. When you see them, tell them!

The scene was very difficult: almost without exception, these young man and women were on cell phones talking to those they loved, as if there might not be another chance. Sadly, for some of them there will not be and they will have died to earn the very freedom that we take for granted!

Just thought I would remind you--

Forty Seven Years Ago--Tonight!!

Forty-seven years ago tonight, I graduated from Reynolds High School; my how time flies!! For some reason, I had been voted by my peers as "Most Athletic" but for some other reason, my knees don't work quite like they did back in those days! Some of us are still alive but others of us have crossed on over to the other side. Some of those of us are are still alive continue to stay in contact, while others of us have disappeared into the black hole of time.

To be sure, those of us who successfully passed through her halls were and continue to be blessed--indeed. Here's to ole' RHS and to those of us who are her sons and daughters!!

Those were, indeed, the good ole days and I miss them!

On Her Wedding Day!

I thought you would appreciate this picture of Christie on her wedding day--such a beautiful bride!

Just for the record: another Wedding is in the planning, and from what I can understand the date has been set and the decorations are in place and the bride is almost ready, with the Bridegroom standing in waiting.

I don't know about you but I can hardly wait to see Him and to be like Him and to enjoy Him forever, in the intimacy promised in the Song of Solomon!

You count on this, even expect it: The Bridegroom is coming for His Bride and the time is at hand! Even so, come Lord Jesus!

Hallelujah!

And the Two Became One

There will be more to come but I thought I would give you this sneak preview of this week-end's wedding. Believe me, not even a Tropical Storm could deter this couple. We had a wonderful, wonderful time!!

Jeff Jensen and Christie Fortson have become Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Jensen!!

Congratulations!!
